South Luangwa National Park, for example, is known as one of the most unspoilt wilderness areas in the world, and home to one of the greatest collections of wildlife including leopard, lion, elephant, giraffe, buffalo, hippo and more than 400 species of birds. In order to explore this wilderness, Robin Pope Safaris has a number of camps and safari houses situated throughout the Luangwa Valley. The Robin Pope team use their extensive knowledge of the region to create the perfect safari experience.
You will stay in one of their 4 luxury safari camps on the banks of the Luangwa River or in one the two safari houses. For the more adventurous there is a chance too to experience overnight walking trails, a night deep in the bush or full on walking mobile.
Robin Pope Safaris specialises in the following types of safaris:
Walking safaris
For guests who want to have a real experience of the wilderness, walking safaris are the best way to uncover the secrets of the bush. Walks are led by an experienced naturalist and accompanied by an armed game scout.
Game viewing drives
Game drives incorporate special game viewing seats that provide an excellent and unique opportunity for photography. Game drives are conducted by knowledgeable safari guides in an open four-wheel drive vehicle. Just two visitors occupy each row to ensure everyone has a 'window seat.'
Night drives
Visitors set out in the afternoon. After watching the sun set over the river, sun downer in hand, they continue on the drive with a powerful spotlight that allows viewing of the nocturnal world of the bush, from owls and genets to hunting lions and the graceful leopard.
Mobile Walking Safaris
The Robin Pope mobile walking safaris have long been known as one of the best wilderness experience of the South Luangwa. After an introductory night at Nkwali Camp, the party drives to the north of the park where they will walk for five days covering approximately 10 Kilometers a day, along the Mupamadzi River. This clear river is a major tributary of the Luangwa River. The area is remote and wild, the terrain and habitats varied and the game shy and unused to the human visitor. From ants to buffalo, a bird's nest to lion tracks, visitors will really experience the bush first hand.
The fully serviced mobile camp is extremely comfortable and well-equipped with walk-in tents and full bedding. The shower is under a tree and the toilet is a bush loo with a wooden throne. Meals of a high standard are served under the open sky. A final night stay at Tena Tena or Nsefu completes the safari.
Robin Pope guides
At Robin Pope Safaris, it is believed that guides are a key to a successful safari – knowledgeable naturalists with an enthusiasm for the bush and an ability to communicate their extensive knowledge to create an unforgettable experience. Guides at Robin Pope Safaris are well trained, confident and fun-loving hosts.
