The university currently operates nine schools which include:
Agriculture Science
The school offers Bachelors, Masters, Doctoral Degrees and other specialized training.
The School of Agricultural Sciences is made up of five departments, namely:
- Animal Science
- Plant Science
- Agricultural Economics and Extension Education
- Soil Science
- Food Science and Technology
The school of Agriculture Science has three undergraduate degree programmes which include:
- Bachelor of Agricultural Sciences- students major in Animal Science, Plant Science, Soil Science, Agricultural Economics or Agricultural Extension
- Bachelor of Human Nutrition
- Bachelor of Food Science and Technology
Education
Currently the largest school in the University with nine academic departments.
The School of Education has various undergraduate programmes that include:
The Bachelor of Arts with Education (BAED) programme in particular, is one of the
largest in the School. The BAED programme is diverse in its nature in that, it is not restricted to offering education related training. The programme is broad enough to incorporate training in natural and social sciences. Natural science training is offered in areas of Physics, Mathematics, Biology, Chemistry and Geography.
Engineering
The School of Engineering currently has five departments that include:
- Agricultural engineering
- Civil and environmental engineering
- Mechanical engineering
- Electrical and electronic engineering
- Geomatic engineering
The School of engineering also awards higher degrees (MEng and PhD).
Humanities and Social Sciences
The School offers four year programmes that include:
- Bachelor of Arts
- Bachelor of Mass Communication
- Bachelor of Social Work
The School of Humanities and Social Sciences also offers Master's programmes in various areas. The main aim of the degree programmes is to equip graduates with an awareness of society and its many problems and of the ways in which they can help to solve these.
Law school
The institution has partnered with the Zambia Centre for Accountancy Studies and offers the Bachelor of Laws (LLB) Commercial Law Degree. The programme is aimed at equipping candidates with knowledge and skills in the field of commercial and business law and the broad context in which they operate.
Medicine
The school has a vision to be a leader in tertiary health, education, care and training, care and research in the region.

Mines
The school has a vision to be a leader in provision of higher education in mines and mineral sciences in the region and beyond, celebrated for its comprehensive and rigorous teaching, learning, research and scholarly programmes that are responsive to the needs of individuals, industry and society.
The school of mines is a centre of excellence in the provision of teaching, research and consultancy services to individuals, the public and industry in Zambia, region and beyond in the area of mines and mineral science programmes.
Natural sciences
This school currently has six departments that include:

- Computer Science
- Geography
- Mathematics and Statistics
- Physics
The school offers a wide range of high-quality science programs leading to a B.Sc. degree. The B.Sc. degree opens up a whole range of career opportunities to graduates. It equips graduates with a broad range of skills that can be translated into a wide variety of fields, laying the foundation for the flexibility to continue to grow and to adapt to changes in the market place.
Veterinary medicine
The programme extends over six years and leads to the award of the degree of Bachelor of Veterinary Medicine of the University of Zambia.
The school of veterinary medicine currently has five departments that include:
- Biomedical studies
- Clinic studies
- Disease control
- Para clinical studies
- Central services and supply
Library
The University of Zambia has three fully stocked libraries that are conveniently set in different physical locations that include- the main library, school of veterinary medicine library and the school of medicine library.
The three libraries are dedicated to supporting the teaching, research and outreach efforts of the university and to serving the community through its collections, preservation efforts and access to information in all of its various formats.
UNZA libraries have also introduced the electronic resources through which the users can access thousands of scholarly databases.
Short courses
The University of Zambia also offers short courses in the following:

- Using Quantitative and Qualitative Methods of Analysing Research and M&E Data
- Special computer training
- Professional computer courses and IT Consultancy
