Tribal Textiles does not mass produce and, in fact, believes its strength lies in its hand-made process – originality is the focus and true beauty of its products. The Tribal Textiles team (over 100 artists) takes enormous pride in each individual creation – no two items are the same as each piece is individually hand-painted. The many designs used draw inspiration from traditional African art and culture as well as from the wildlife, flora and forna of the exceptional natural environment of the South Luangwa National Park, Zambia's prime safari location. The different colourways used to create the final product enhance these unique designs. Colours range from bush reds and earth blues to pure bright and bold colours like azure blue, magenta and saffron reds and oranges.
The objective of this thriving company is to promote fair trade practices, generate local employment and develop creative skills. The company supports and raises funds for the local community school, Malimba, which educates over 160 children.
Malimba Community School
Malimba is a rural village within the Mfuwe area on the edge of South Luangwa National Park in Eastern Zambia. Before the Malimba School was founded, the nearest school was 6km away. In mid 2001 the community decided to build a mud and thatch classroom. For many children this was the first time they had the opportunity to attend school. At this time the teachers were dedicated volunteers but not formally qualified. The children sat on bricks and took turns writing with chalk on a homemade blackboard. Very soon the number of children attending the school grew to nearly 100. The community, realizing they needed help, came to Tribal Textiles and the Carr family for assistance, and the Malimba Community School Fund was created. The Malimba School now boasts two concrete classroom blocks and a dining room; the World Food Association now provides breakfast for all students.
