Nkhwazi school has a vision to be the best primary school education provider in the country. The school works hard to provide a high standard of education for pupils of all backgrounds through an academically stimulating and relevant programme to help prepare them for life's challenges.
Their main objectives are:
- To provide first class primary education to enable pupils to proceed with ease to secondary schools of choice, whether in Zambia or abroad
- To maintain strong links with other schools through organisations such as the Independent Schools Association of Zambia (ISAZ) to encourage think tanks and the maintenance of standards
- To educate the 'whole child' not only in academic areas, but also in artistic, cultural and sporting activities
- To instill social and family values into the daily lives of pupils
Presently the school has 17 classes (two in each grade and three Reception classes). The recommended class size is 27. When all classes are full the total student population is around 460. Small class sizes together with dedicated, qualified teachers and excellent facilities help to ensure that Nkhwazi offers high standards in education.
School curriculum
A well tested Anglo-Zambian curriculum is followed at Nkhwazi. It emphasises the mastery of the 'three Rs' – reading, writing and arithmetic. Children cover the Zambia Primary Course (ZPC) in its entirety but the curriculum is greatly expanded along British lines. For example, the main reading schemes are the well known and widely used Oxford Reading Tree, Ginn 360 and Wide Range. For Mathematics, Ginn and Nelson Material is used to augment the ZPC Scheme.
The main subjects are taught by class teachers with classes divided into ability groups. Individual progress is carefully monitored and reading age tests and proficiency tests in Maths and English are regularly administered at appropriate grade levels. Formal examinations for upper primary children take place each year in July and November. At present all grade seven children sit the Zambian Grade seven selection examination for entry into Grade eight. Nkhwazi's Grade seven results are amongst the very best in Lusaka.
Extra curricular activities
The formal structure of the classroom gives students academic knowledge, and the extra-curricular activities get pupils working together and fulfills their need to express unique personalities. Nkhwazi provides excellent facilities including an eight lane 25m swimming pool and an extensive playing field which caters for all sporting activities. Healthy competition is encouraged, providing an arena where skills are learned, interests are nurtured and confidence is gained. All students are expected to participate in extra curricular activities. In all areas of the programme Nkhwazi strongly encourages the development of self-control, discipline and tenacity. Emphasis is always placed on integrity, good conduct and sportsmanship.
