Ngonye River Camp

This bush camp is situated close to the Zambezi River's stunning Ngonye Falls close to the Sioma Ngwezi National Park. Each safari tent has excellent views of nearby waterholes. Based on eco-tourism principles, the camp uses sustainable energy sources as far as possible – water turbines and solar power supplemented by a generator. Cell phone communication is impossible due to the remoteness of the place. Seeing the falls is an incredible experience and the highlight of the stay. Hopefully more people will be able to experience Sioma Falls and Ngonye River Camp now that the Chinese are completing the tar road from Livingstone to Sioma.

You can put up a small tent put next to your chalet for extra sleeping as the owners a very flexiable about what arrangments you want put in different places. Dotted all around the large site are lounging chairs just hanging in trees and you can hang out and look at the views for hours.

The staff are remarkably friendly and will organise whatever you want. Boat trips to the falls at Sioma are not to be missed and you can take one just as the sun is coming down for spectacular views. The safari drive is not so great, as the national park is not well stocked, but you may get lucky. You can even charge small electronic appliances for you during the evening if you need it, but there is no mobile signal, so it is a welcome break from disturbances.

There are no shops and no villages even near Ngonye River Camp, so you do need to bring everything you want with you – if not, the food they prepare is very good and there is a always a supply of cool drinks whenever you need them.

Currently the road from Sesheke is an all-year dirt road of about 115km – about two hours drive. Sesheke is only two hours from Livingstone on a fast tar highway. Going north from Sioma, the road to Senanga is about 70km on dirt roads. It takes 2.5 hours usually, but the last 1 hour, on the other side of the river, is on the flood plain and so not passable in the rainy season. It is also possible to get direct from Sioma to Kalabo without crossing the river. Ngonye River Camp will give you up to date advice if you need it and making a circular tour may also be possible up through Kafue National Park depending on the time of year.
