Musikili Primary School

For most parents and guardians, Musikili’s weekly boarding option is the most sought after, as their school bus services provide the opportunity for children to travel home on Friday’s, before returning on the Monday morning bus. This option allows pupils to spend quality time with family, recharge and prepare for the upcoming week.

Musikili Primary School aims to make the boarding experience as warm and homely as possible, and their care goes well beyond meeting children’s most obvious practical needs. The school believes that it is the small things which make all the difference to their boarders’ experience, and it does everything it can to make pupils feel secure, well-cared-for and happy at all times.

Education at this school is rather unique and every child is fully engaged in their solid academic curriculum and an extra-curricular programme that provides an opportunity for all children to realise their potential.

Extra-curricular programmes

Sports

This school’s sporting programme aims to provide every pupil with the chance to develop and improve a well-rounded skill-set, challenge themselves and – above all – build a life-long enthusiasm for physical activity as a normal part of their routine.

Both boys and girls will participate in a wide range of sporting disciplines including football, hockey, rugby (and rugby 7s), netball, cross country, cricket, athletics, swimming, rounders, tennis and dance.

Musikili fields teams in each of these disciplines and tries to give every child the opportunity to represent the school in their chosen sport. Many children at Musikili have achieved regional and national honours in their senior years, and their talented athletes have represented their junior school with distinction as they have excelled in many of the highly renowned senior schools, to which they have gained entry.

Musikili believes that the experience of competing, hosting an opposition team, conducting themselves appropriately at other venues, being responsible for kit, and thanking the referee at the end of their match is an important opportunity to learn and grow into a well-rounded person.

Clubs

Musikili’s clubs offer an option for all children to experience something different in a relaxed environment. The following are the current clubs at the school:

Friendship bracelets club

This club started off nicely with the Grade 2s during the first 3 weeks of the term. As tying tiny knots is quite challenging for children, Musikili went for a different method of making woven bracelets by weaving yarn over three straws, which they removed later. It was quite challenging, but in the end, almost every pupil had a finished product and was proud of having made something useful and pretty at the same time. Older grades will, later on, explore the more traditional way of making knotted bracelets.

Fun aerobics club

A fitness club that engages in different fun exercises and dance routines that gets hearts of pupils pumping. Learners will enjoy stretching their muscles and get the chance to be active and jam out to their favourite music. This club helps develop a healthy lifestyle and incorporates fitness as a natural part of children’s lives by making fitness fun.

Environmental club

In this club, grade 6 pupils learn about the countless benefits of spekboom for the Earth. They are all tasked with looking after their own spekboom, cutting and propagating them in water until they root and then planting them in reused containers until they can be planted around the school. The grade 6s have also been taught to reuse paper as a creative outlet through the creation of junk journals.

Construction club

Grade R and 1 pupils experiment with creating 3D sculptures with paper strips, working off a flat base. Grade 2s and 3s also begin with paper strip sculptures, with or without a flat base. They then move into 3D construction using wooden blocks, wood glue and paper strips utilised as tape to hold the blocks together. The creative process and design is the emphasis, as opposed to the end product.

Scripture union club

An exciting and lively way for pupils to learn how to apply God’s principles to their daily lives. Children will enjoy much laughter and fun as they learn about living out the Christian life in busy, pressurised and often difficult circumstances. Pupils form groups in which games are played which relate to life lessons and principles for right living.

Memory verses are also learnt, usually with songs and actions to assist in their recall. At the end of the club’s 3-week cycle, it is hoped that all pupils know that the name of the Lord is a strong tower, and that they can run to Him and feel safe whenever they feel vulnerable or face a tough time (Proverbs 18:10).

Arts and crafts club

Grade 3s make cards using recycled items, googly eyes, paper, glitter and colourful cards. Their creative juices are allowed to flow and produce some beautiful and unique cards for friends and family.

Choir

Musikili Primary School has two choirs:

• Junior choir – 8, 9 and 10-year-olds or Grade 3, 4 and 5
• Senior choir – 10, 11 and 12-year-olds or Grade 6 and 7

All children are encouraged to take part in the choirs.

Music

From grades R to 7, all classes are allocated one period per week for music.

Drama

Musikili’s annual senior (grade 4-7) concert is held at the end of the 2nd school term. The annual junior (grade R-3) end of year concert is held at the end of the 3rd school term.
