Example of a development project whose support offsets carbon emissions
The client is Buyantanshi Open Christian Community Schools (BOCCS) and the project is Waya School Sanitation Project in a peri-urban area of Kabwe in Zambia.
The project is a charitable mission school which ran a school feeding program and was facing difficulties in sourcing enough fuel wood for the program. There was no option of using cookers. An improved toilet block with Decentralised Waters Treatment Solution (DEWATS) was designed and built and a biogas digester was added to the DEWATS system.
The results achieved:
- The cooks are able to cook over bio-gas which reduces the fuel wood amount by over 50% making the school more environmentally friendly, and cutting fuel costs by that amount.
- The pupils have an improved toilet that will be clean
- Hand washing facilities have been placed near the toilet so that adequate sanitation is observed
- Children have been trained in proper hand washing
