Commonly called a filling station in Zambia, a petrol station is a facility which sells fuel and lubricants for motor vehicles and bikes as well as kerosene and LPG gas for cooking and heating with the most common fuels sold being petrol or diesel.
While other countries like the United States allow self-service, in Zambia the situation is different. Attendants are required to pump gas because customers are barred from pumping their own gas.
Other goods and services commonly available at petrol stations
Many petrol stations also have convenience stores that sell food, beverages, cigarettes, motor oil, and sometimes auto parts. Prices for these and other items tend to be higher at convenience stores than they would be at a supermarket or discount store.
A large number of filling stations also provide toilet facilities for customer use, but a few do not provide these amenities. Many also have air compressors with tyre gauges – all machines are free of charge. Some filling stations are equipped with car washes - washes are offered at a fee.
There are a number of filling stations with fast food outlets. These are usually "express" versions with limited seating and limited menus, though some may be regular-sized and have spacious seating.

- Diesel - generally classified as a high sulphur product suitable for many lights and heavy-duty engines that specify for such a fuel
- Low sulphur diesel - contains approximately 250ppm sulphur +/- for the more modern compression ignition engines.
